Lower Columbia Community Action Program and two partnering groups will provide free federal tax return assistance this year.

A “Tax Season Kick Off” will be held from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Longview Public Library, featuring refreshments, information and resources on asset-building. Tax assistance will be available that day, although the IRS won’t accept returns until Jan. 30.

CAP and trained members of AARP and the Cowlitz Assets Building Coalition will also provide free tax assistance to filers of all ages and incomes from Jan. 30 through April 15.

AARP tax aides will be at three sites:

  • CAP, 1526 Commerce Ave, Longview, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday.
  • Longview Public Library, 1600 Louisiana St., from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
  • Fibre Federal Credit Union’s administration building on Douglas Street and Commerce Avenue, from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays.

Help is also is available from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. weekdays at CAP for self-filers. Computers and a tax specialist will be available. Call 425-3430, extension 248, to make an appointment or for more information.
